You get the choice after the Kaer Morhen battle and before going to the bald mountain, in case you forgot.

That's not accurate; for the Empress ending you have to go visit the Emperor AND Nilfgaard has to win the war. If you don't kill Radovid in Reason of State, or if you do kill him but side with Dijkstra so that he rules instead, then Nilfgaard loses the war and Ciri becomes a Witcher still. 6 more replies. Ciri becomes Empress only if Geralt brings her to Emyr. At the end of the game she faces the choice of becoming Empress or run into the wilds, and she chooses to pick up the responsibility to govern a large empire. She is not presented that choice in case of the "witcher Ciri" ending.

It's not what Ciri wanted, and it's not exactly what Geralt wanted. And, low key, I think a lot of players still kind of want a power fantasy, despite the fact that the narrative of Witcher 3 goes out of its way to undercut any power fantasy aspects. So since "Ciri becomes a Witcher" ending is the closest to what Geralt wanted, it's the preferred ending among the fans who wanted the power fantasy.

Accepting it and accumulating enough positive points to keep Ciri alive will cause her to become Empress at the end of the game, and counts as a negative point.

Emhyr wanted Ciri to take over the throne since his position was threatened at the time. However, if you kill Radovid and he wins his position is solidified and he is no longer at risk of being overthrown, therefore he doesn't really need Ciri as much as he did at the start of the game. #9.

It directly conflicts with book lore. In the book it is stated that Morvan Voorhis becomes the new ruler after Emhyr, so if Ciri becomes empress it would create a plot hole between the game and the books. Because Ciri from the books would never accept that, she considers herself a witcher.
